For all of you gamblers out there I want to let you know of this town in the middle of nowhere that has sooooooooo many casinos I couldn't count them. They are on main streets, down side streets, on hills and built into the side of mountains. I was totally not expecting it (this links to the not planning anything) and was surprised when I got of one canyon and this town appeared.
I did not stop to gamble since I am on the "healthy' kick right now and I knew I would either have coffee or alcohol. Or, the truth is I did not stop because while I was impressed with the town and would love to have seen inside a few of them - for me, once you been there you've done that and I don't like spending lots of time on the slot machines. I can do 20 dollars on quarters, and unless I have won and have another 20 I am done. Can't stand choosing to lose money which is what it ends up for me. Unlike Mom and some of the other family (Pat K) I do not generally walk out with any large sums of money.
In case you are interested in getting there - I suggest you take the back roads which is Road 119. The gambling town of BLACK HAWK, which is between Nederland (which is like an old Hippy town or as we call them now - artist communities. Lots of gem and crystal type places; My favorites was "Off her Rocker". Seemed to fit for me for some reason) and Central City. You pass Idaho Falls on the way and then you get on the wonderful Road 40 which really gets you in the mountains. I wondered why I saw so many cars coming down the mountain not going up - and now I know.
I did check out the Colorado tourist booklet today and not a word was mentioned about BlackHawk. I wonder if they are the Native American Casinos like we have in Michigan or if they are privately owned by some Colorado mobsters. (Mom, check it out and let me know. Maybe this can be your 90th birthday trip. We can recreate our Michigan City girls weekend)
The only challenge will be that it is easier to say what happens in Vegas staysin Vegas than What happens in Black Hawk stays in Black Hawk. Doesn't have the same ring....
