Questions I didn’t have answers for, but then one doesn’t need all the answers anyway.
Why is there a donkey in a group of horses? Do you think that is where the expression horse’s ass comes from? I first noticed it a few times in Colorado, then saw it again in Wyoming several times and then just yesterday I saw it again in Illinois. I did do the check to make sure they were not baby horses.
If the road is a reddish color, why did they patch it by putting two black asphalt rows down the sides of each lane? There would be long stretches of good road, then a long stretch of black lines then good roads, etc. I wonder if either the dirt will eventually stick to it and make it red again or if they will just tar the whole road. It would be a shame since the red roads are prettier.
What did those windmill type things do out on the prairie farms? It appears they were just in the middle of a field not attached to anything. Was it just to know if the wind was blowing or did they serve a purpose? I only know I was fascinated my them for awhile. Maybe because they were the lone sentinels standing upright and I was feeling a connection. Ok, that could be a stretch. Maybe they were reminiscent of Dutch windmills and my roots have changed my route a couple of times.
Why did I buy that silly polka dot hat? I must have been lost and on some weird trip. I have never worn a hat in my life and probably never will. So, now I have something to add to the dress up box for the g-kids.
Who takes car of the little churches in the middle of no where? And, how many folks go to all of the little white churches that are all over the countryside? It seems like there was no homes, ranches or towns nearby and then there would be a cute little church in the middle of no where. Of course I became obsessed by them and had to stop and take a look. None were open, but they sure were cute.
Are the roads in the mountains so curvy because that’s the way the rock fell when they dynamited them? Did someone know how it would look before they started it? Every mountain range I drove through had these winding curvy roads that were a bit scary. You would be going down hill and then the road took a turn and sometimes there was a barrier to keep you from going over and sometimes not. Were they planned as they are? I know there was a trail made by the pioneers, but obviously they were widened and paved since then.
Who cleans up the droppings of the animals that are roaming free in the city? In Mammoth, WY there were animals (I have no idea if they were mooses or elks since I didn’t see the horns) just walking around the parks and yards. I don’t like to clean up after dogs or cats, and would not want to have to walk outside and worry about stuff in my yard.
Why are John Deere tractors green? I saw more of them in fields and at big stores selling them, so I know they are probably the most used farm machinery around. But the green seems to be a blending color versus a watch out for me color. I came upon one driving down the road, and wasn’t prepared for it. And I was driving slow on the back roads, just looking around, not straight ahead. If it was a bright orange or yellow, I might have noticed it sooner out of the corner of my eye and not had to do a quick reaction.
How do towns get their names? Some are pretty evident since it is after a land mark such as Idaho Falls, Twin Bridges, Hot Sulphur Springs, others you just assume are named after one of the founding fathers like Crawford, Kimball, Lincoln, and others are after the Native Americans like Sioux City, Black Eagle, Shosoni. The ones I don’t get are the weird names like Normal, Assumption, Early, Correctionville, Lust, Smoot, and Tea. Who wants to say, “ I come from Correctionville. Wanna make something of it.”
And, as I was driving on the toll road today, I saw lots of motorcyclists. Where do they keep their I-passes? Most people have them hanging on their windshields, I put mine on the dash whenever I am needing it. But were could you put it on a motorcycle that has wind blowing?
I am sure I had lots of other questions that ran through my mind over the past three weeks. On some, I got my answers….on others, they weren’t relevant enough to even remember the question.
And for most of these, I am good with not knowing. It gives me a reason to keep looking for answers. And when it is to the non-important things in life, it is often easier than trying to figure out how to respond to the bigger questions.
