The movers have come and gone.....and what an experience. They showed up at 8:40 am after I received a call telling me they were on the way. Of course I was glad for the extra minutes since I had only had a few hours sleep ( I went to Michigan on Wednesday to spend the day with the G-kids and stretched the time so I was LATE getting back to Chicago) and needed to get a few cups of coffee in my blood stream so I could function. My sweet doorman Mark called and announced their arrival as I was updating my change of address to have everything sent to JT and Jessica's. (the day before I had a Post Office experience that played into the stereotype that government run agencies are a bit ass backwards. But that is another story)
Anyway, this was the day that I wished I did not throw away the Spanish language tapes and had really tried to learn basic words. So while I felt that I was heard, I was very isolated in someone speaking back to me....and that was not easy. How can I show how charming and wonderful I really am if the people around me are not talking to me? I had to quickly adjust and realize that I am paying these guys to pack my things, not to socialize with...what a switch.
Even as I tried to feed them carrots, apples, pickles and any food that was in the refrigerator, I got lots of smiles and nods, but hardly a word spoken to me. And then as I tried to tape a box or carry something, it was immediately taken out of my hands and attended to with a smile and a nod. If I wasn't such a verbal person, I could almost get used to having a man attend to everything and not say a word....kidding......
Six hours and a little over a thousand dollars later, I have my things in storage and the way they wrapped and protected everything, I feel like I need to keep them there for awhile to get the value out of such a good packing and moving job. The last two times I hired someone to do this, I was almost in tears. With these guys I almost wanted to hug them for being so good with my stuff. Heck, they were kind enough to wrap my vision board with one of my pictures and if they wondered what the heck it was, I couldn't understand them anyway....I have so much shrink wrap around things, that I should try and save it when I move again and use it for a body wrap...
Once everything was in storage, the bill was paid and I gave them each a tip.....I finally heard some words. The crew leader wanted to make sure I filled out the customer satisfaction survey and made any comments. The strong young guy wished me a happy vacation and asked where I was going. The older quiet guy said 'gracias' and nodded, and the cute bad boy thanked me for the lunch and gave me a cute bad boy grin. Made my day......
So, moving day is over and I am homeless once again.......

Too funny!! I wish there was a camera to capture the day!!!
ReplyDeleteSo are you saying that talking to yourself this day was not enough? Are you sure that you were not elbowing them every once in a while to make a point? Silent movies would never have been your gig.
